Gorilla trunk art in City Park near the Denver Zoo
Each year in our neighborhood some of the 80 to 100-year-old trees die. Lately it has become the custom here to convert these trees into carved art. I've written about this several times on this blog. If you want to see more of these "art trunks," scroll down to Categories, Click Art and scroll to May 5, 2004.
I don't know the name of any of the carvers as they are not identified. In this case the Park and Recreation Department must know the name because they must certainly have gotten permission to save the trunk from grinding by creating this gorilla. I for one applaud this policy so long as it doesn't create a fire hazard or damage the environment. This trunk contributes beauty and is still a player in the ecosystem. So far I have observed about 20 such trunk art sculptures around the city and all have been well done. As long as healthy trees are not used or damaged, I'm all for it.
